The Funk King- Animatic

Posted by Mabelma - March 13th, 2021

Fresh off the oven is this awesome action packed animatic I did for the FNF jam, it took me way longer than I had expected and I plan on reworking it with colors and more detail to release it on a future date, however I’m pretty happy with how it came out. I think it’s the first animatic I’ve ever done in like 20hrs total time, it will look really awesome when it’s all colored and refined.

It’s also the first time I ever use a comic format for storyboarding and honestly it was probably the best move for future animations. Bang out a quick sketchy comic and refine right on top. Quite handy process.

Had a ton of fun planning out all the deaths and the overall story, the idea is that a couple of hundred years in the future. During the robot battles of Drop Cannon and the post-apocalypse of Tankman. Boyfriend and girlfriend team up with Lemon Man to kidnap Pico from NGHQ and brainwash him into thinking he’s a character in a videogame, but after Lemon Man’s disrespect towards boyfriend he decides to break Pico loose. Right around this time Darnell and Nene are closing in on Pico’s location and all hell breaks loose. Pico tries to forgive boyfriend but decides against it when he realizes that the reason he really broke him loose is cause he craved the mic (“fame”) all to himself and wanted to get rid of Lemon Man all in one blow.

The voices were done by the awesome @Cyberdevil

All animated in Flash, handrawn.

When in doubt paint everything black and add a noise filter to it.

Go check it out and give a nice rating and a review.

Nice rating given but hmm feels kinda odd to review something I've been involved in as much as this... maybe when everybody else has had their chance there. :) Turned out dope; thanks for allowing me the honors of random vocal sfx and lines for the full cast no less! Pleasant surprise to be in on this too.

Hahaha indeed, I make a habit of liking my own stuff though figured if I’m not gonna be proud enough to like it, why would others. But hey! Thank you! I think your voice work gave it a whole nother layer of awesomeness and you know I’ll hit you up for more voices after we start cleaning it up for the final release.

True that, and thank you!

Even more voices though?! XD Plan to extend the runtime; make more room for story progression/lines if so? Maybe that was the plan all along though, just no time at this point?

I might do a bit of timing corrections here and there, so there will definitely be a need for a new audio track, and I’d love some extra voices. That pumpkin man needs a good “oomph” when he dies, and I’d love for Lemon Man to give us a big hurt sound when he explodes, but mostly I’m gonna focus on cleaning all the art up and adding color. I would love to make more pieces like this that deal with my take on the NG lore. In my mind all the games, and characters are living in the Tankman post-apocalyptic times. I’m thinking of a clock crew animation where they’re semi naked savages that come from the forest to reclaim what the bots took from them in Drop Cannon.

Ah little things like that, can do that. :) Sounds good. Was thinking while reading the story in the description that you currently maybe need to really read the story to actually understand the story, you jump into it all a bit suddenly, Pico already tied up and all... wondering if plot progression becomes all clear when the visuals are clear or if there's maybe still just a bit too much going on in a short period of time...

lmao. XD That'd be awesome too. Could become a whole alternative NG universe/homage series with these!"

I mean not that I couldn't do entire lines, but: that's even more doable than expected. XD

Sounds good too!
